Manufacturers test and warrant their systems as complete assemblies. A sheet membrane from one brand married to a drain flange from another is the most common way a warranty claim is refused, and the two components are not designed to bond to each other.
The pan and the slope
Water leaves a shower because the floor tells it where to go. A pan can be a sloped mortar bed built on site or a pre-formed foam pan, and both work when the fall is right — roughly a quarter inch per foot from every point to the drain. Under-sloped pans are the reason some shower floors never fully dry and stain in the same places.

- Yes, when installed to the manufacturer's instructions with the matching drain. Their advantage is a consistent slope; their limit is that odd shapes and sizes may need a mortar bed instead.
